Resistance Exercise is an exercise program for Seniors to strengthen those muscles used in walking and getting out of a chair. The program was developed by Dr. Marie Fiatarone. Dr. Fiatarone received a grant to help keep Seniors ambulatory. She worked with 1,500 Seniors, ages 55 to 96. Some of the participants used canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and some were even bedridden. After participating in this exercise program for a short time, all the participants began to see an improvement. Most of the people who used canes, walkers, and wheelchairs no longer needed them. Some of the people who were bedridden were able to get out of bed without assistance.
If you would like to take a chance on getting rid of your cane, walker, or wheelchair, or if you would like to stay ambulatory for the rest of your days, visit our class here at the Carson City Senior Center. We'll show you the program and if you like what you see, we'll work with you and help you get started. There is currently open space in this class, so just walk in and get moving!
